Cover Story in Journal of Genetics and Genomics

The former postdoc Zongji Wang from Qi Zhou’s group published his work on the evolution of Palaegoanthae bird sex chromosomes, and the work was featured as a cover story on the latest February issue. The cover shows the studied species’ phylogeny and their ancestral ZW sex chromosomes. What is interesting is that most these bird species, e.g., ostrich, cassowary, rheas etc., have paternal-only care and probably a weak sexual selection targeting the males. This may explain their much slower rate of sex chromosome evolution compared to other birds. On the cover, all the male birds are tending the eggs or the chicks.
